Are we receiving the “real news”?

These days, there are many ways for us to receive the news, such as social media, television, and radio. For youngsters, social media is the most familiar way for them to receive news, they will scroll through Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, texting with friends and family by WhatsApp or Messenger. People who are over 30, might use Facebook, online newspapers, and television to get to know the news, and the elderly might read the news from the newspaper. Although there are different platforms for people to get to know the news, they might be reading the same things, because under the manufacturing consent.

Manufacture consent is to create a system that makes people be willing to listen, consent, unquestioning and obedient, through the mass media and commercialism by way of corporate-sponsored propaganda, rather than using strongman tactics to achieve obedience. As the mentioned social media platforms, most of those are under the large company, “Meta Platforms”. WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, all of them are under Meta. By applying the manufacturing consent on Meta, they would corporate-sponsored propaganda through mass media and commercialism, which means giving the same now to the people on all platforms to make people be obedient and not question the social system. The people who would like spin control could pay for Meta to help them do that, especially in politics.

Not only have the social media platforms been under control, but television could also have spin control. The new channel, CNN, Cable News Network, the multinational news channel in the United States, having broadcast in many places around the world, is also able to spin control according to the propaganda model.

The 5 Filters of the propaganda model introduced by Edward. S. Herman and Noam Chomsky | by Tala Moukahal | Medium

The propaganda model was suggested by Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky, the US theorist, and published in their book “Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media” in 1988. It shows how the economic, social, and political mechanisms are manufactured to control and manipulate consumers, with the five filters, ownership, advertising, sourcing, flak, and anti-communication. Thus, CNN would be able to filter the raw news, like pasting through the five filters in the propaganda model, and showing the side of the news that they would like to show to the audiences. Since CNN broadcasts in the United States, Japan, Canada, India, Caribbean islands, and Worldwide, which is a lot of places around the world, the filtered news will be spread to the world and the people will believe that no one will know about the truth and they could spin control.

Therefore, nowadays, by applying the Manufacturing consent and propaganda model by Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky to the media, we know that we might have a chance to receive “fake” news or filtered news, rather than the truth.
