First and foremost, my name is Lailat, and it is pronounced lie-la, not lay-lat or lay-la, regardless of the spelling; that is how it is pronounced.
After two years of declaring I would never step foot inside any form of higher institution, I did a gap year working full-time in central London hospitality, where I often prayed that there would be more to life than eating cold chips and repeating the phrase “is everything alright here?” for 45 hours a week. This painful realisation led me to go to university to study Digital media. For my A levels, I spent two years studying the ologies of human behaviour (psychology, sociology, philosophy and ethics); from there, I became deeply interested in social theories and human interactions, which is why I decided to branch out into studying digital media. This course allows me to apply social theories and examine human interactions and communication through a different and more complex medium.
As a child, I spent most of my time ignoring the world around me by fulfilling my delusions and entertaining my hyperactive imagination by reading comics, watching anime or playing sports; and 20 years later, nothing has changed other than the fact that I now have to spend my own money to do such. By the age of 20, I have already read a large majority of the X-men series (however, my favourite comic series is the Umbrella Academy), developed a Spiderman obsession, consumed an ungodly amount of shonen anime (in other words, caught up on One Piece) and I have played a variety of sports from tennis and gymnastics to swimming and weightlifting.
My other debt-incurring hobbies involve going to concerts, audio mixing (equipment and software are not free) and going on trips I can’t afford to take pictures, all to prove to myself that life is worth living.
