Is social media really as unique as we think?

Most of us have opened instagram just to have a quick look and ended up doom scrolling for much longer than we planned. This is because there is always new to watch, whether it is a funny video a post from an influencer or a new trend that everyone seems to be following. But when we look closely a lot of content is quite similar. This made me think about how much choice we really have when using social media.

One theory that helps explain this is the culture industry developed by Theoder Adorno and max Horkheimer.

What is the Culture Industry?

Adorno and Horkheimer believed that culture was becoming more like a product that was made to be sold. Entertainment was not just about creativity or giving people something to enjoy. It was also connected to businesses, profit and getting people to consume more.

One idea from the theory is called standardisation. This is when cultural products follow similar patterns rather than being completely different.

Another concept is pseudo individualisation which means something can look unique even though it follows a familiar formula.

This ideas links to social media today. Different creators might have their own personalities and styles, but they often use the same trending music, video formats or editing techniques. The content looks different at first, but the basic idea behind it can be very similar.

How dose this relate to instagram?

Instagram has lots of content, but many creators follow similar trends, use the same sounds and promote similar products. This links to standardisation and pseudo individualisation, as content can look unique while following familiar patterns. Influencers also mix entertainment with advertising through sponsored posts.

Is the theory still relevant?

I think the Culture Industry theory is still useful, although it can be too negative about audiences. People can create their own content, share opinions and support causes online. However, creators may still follow trends to gain views or earn money through sponsorships.

Final thoughts

Learning about this theory has made me think more carefully about the content I see online. Instagram offers creativity and choice, but commercial interests still influence what we consume.
